Artifact TypeDress
Date1987

This black wrap dress was worn by k.d. lang on the cover for her 1987 album, Angel With a Lariat—the second studio album with her band, the Reclines, named in tribute to country legend Patsy Cline. Embellished with a belt and three sparkly flower brooches, lang also wore the dress on the April 1987 cover of Canadian Musician magazine, and for a live performance of Roy Orbison’s “Crying” at the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 1989. This dress marks a shift in lang’s personal style on stage, toning down her cow-punk flair in favour of a more sophisticated look and a greater focus on her voice.
