Artifact TypeJacket
Date1992

Designed in collaboration with Henry Duarte and made from furniture fabric, this green and black velvet brocade jacket was worn by k.d. lang during her 1992 world tour for her album, Ingénue. The Alberta native’s clothing style evolved from thrift-shop threads to custom-tailored suits—transforming along with her expanding musical repertoire from hootenanny cowpunk to urban hip to minimalist sophistication. Never one to conform, lang came to represent an unapologetic female masculinity. Describing her penchant for suits, she once said, “I don’t feel like a woman, and I don’t feel like a man; I feel like both, simultaneously. Suits help me achieve some type of balance.”
