Smilin' Johnnie Guitar

This Martin D-28 guitar was owned and used by Johnnie Lucky, also known as Smilin’ Johnnie. The Wroxton, Saskatchewan born musician led the country-folk family band Smilin’ Johnnie and his Prairie Pals for over 60 years. He purchased the guitar in 1964, when he responded to a newspaper ad in North Battleford, SK., and added the fluorescent tape not only to cover up some damage but to match the rest of his creative show - which included comedy skits, songs, and a closing hymn played under black light. There are other traces of Johnnie on the guitar, from a setlist taped to the body to stage banter on the neck. These unique decorations commemorate Smilin’ Johnnie’s 60 years performing live on stage.

 "It was important for dad to have people know he wasn’t a “fair-weather” performer; he was there for the long haul, through thick and thin. He talked about that a lot around the house. The decorations were just another aspect of him saying he was a proud Canadian Country music entertainer."
