Artifact TypeGuitar, Acoustic
Date1980

Thought to be one of the earliest instruments of his prolific, three-decade career, this flattop acoustic guitar by Canadian luthier Robert Laughlin is made mostly of rosewood while the top is spruce. Laughlin is known for incorporating native Canadian woods into his instruments, including maple, yellow cedar, and Sitka spruce from the Northwest Coast. While he began his career with guitars, Laughlin has more recently specialized in large mandolin family instruments such as the octave mandolin and Irish bouzouki. His instruments are greatly valued by musicians for their tone and playing characteristics. Interestingly, Laughlin did not assign serial numbers to his instruments until 1996, so this guitar from 1980 has no serial number.
