BiographyCBS Masterworks began as Columbia Masterworks, a subsidiary of Columbia Records, in 1927. The ‘Masterworks’ demarcation was generally used to refer to recordings that were primarily classical in nature. Columbia Masterworks officially became CBS Masterworks in 1980, and then Sony Classical Records in 1990 after a merger with Sony.
