Equal parts primitive and groovy, this P.A. controller was likely used as a basic amplification system by the Merry Pranksters—novelist Ken Kesey’s notorious counterculture troupe—on a cross-country bus trip to Woodstock in 1969. Donald Buchla, a member of the troupe, designed it to be used with his first voltage-controlled modular synthesizer. Buchla’s instruments, lauded for their alternative approach to control and performance, were strongly associated with the counterculture movement of the late ’60s and early ’70s.
