Canadian Marconi Console Radio

The vintage radio seen here was made by the Canadian Marconi Company (CMC) Ltd. in Montréal. CMC was founded in 1903 as the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of Canada by Italian inventor and Nobel Prize-winner, Guglielmo Marconi. After successfully broadcasting the first transatlantic radio signal from England to St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1901, Marconi erected a wireless radio station on Cape Breton Island to communicate with ships at sea. The company began to manufacture electrical and radio equipment during World War I, and established one of the world’s first public radio stations, CFCF Montréal, in 1960.
