Lucille Starr Dress

One of Canada’s first country queens, Lucille Marie Raymonde Savoie, known professionally as Lucille Starr, was raised in Port Coquitlam, B.C. Starr began her career as part of the country duo the Canadian Sweethearts before finding success as a solo artist. The Francophone singer’s first major hit came in 1964 with “The French Song,” so-called because her producer couldn't pronounce the original title, “Quand le soleil dit bonjour aux montagnes”. The song was an international bestseller, making Starr the first Canadian female singer to earn a gold record, and the first female solo artist to perform onstage at the Grand Ole Opry in 1965. She made history again in 1989 as the first woman inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. This colourful mod-style dress was worn by Starr on the cover of several albums for The Canadian Sweethearts with her husband Bob Regan.
