BiographyWestern Electric was a telecommunications and electronics firm that primarily functioned between 1881 and 1996. It was first incorporated in 1872 in Chicago, Illinois as the Western Electric Manufacturing Company, initially specializing in the production of telephone receivers and relays as well as typewriters. In 1881, following a legal dispute between the Bell Telephone Company and Western Union over ownership, Western Electric was subsumed by the former. In 1915, the company was moved to New York, New York and branded Western Electric Company, Inc., a formal subsidiary of AT&T.
