Parlour Organ

Based in Clinton, Ontario, W. Doherty & Co. began making organs on a small scale in 1875. From the serial number, we know this organ was made in 1887, during the height of the company’s production. Powered by foot pumps at the bottom of the instrument, this organ uses reeds rather than pipes to create a more intimate sound than that of a pipe organ. Reed organs like this one were commonly referred to as ‘Parlour Organs’ as any tasteful Victorian-era parlor was not complete without one. This particular organ would have been considered a high-end piece, with its burl walnut accents, ivory keys, and ornate features.
