Zumpe Square Piano
The square piano predated the vertical piano by nearly half a century—however, both were designed as cheaper, more accessible alternatives to the grand piano. Unlike the grand, the square piano orients its strings almost perpendicular to the keys rather than parallel to them. It was celebrated for its light, harpsichord-like sound. The piano’s maker, Johannes Zumpe, was a German émigré to England, and this particular instrument was one of the first square pianos ever produced in an English-speaking country.
Fallboard inscription: 'Johannes Zumpe Londini fecit 1766'.
