Roy Wilcox Interview

Author, educator and musician Roy Wilcox was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. He was one of the founding members of the 1960s Calgary band The Esquires, also known as The S’Quires. Formed in 1960, The Esquires were an instrumental rock act comprised of musicians Greg Thomas, Nes Davison, Al Cook, Mark Hornby and Roy Wilcox. The group performed regularly at schools and community centres around the city and played as the house band on Don Wood’s Teen and Twenty Show on CFCN TV. Wilcox left the band in the early ‘60s to pursue academic aspirations, and he later became an educator and administrator for the Calgary Board of Education. After retiring, he published his first book in 2017, titled Garage Band Rockers – Stories of Alberta Rock Bands in the ‘60s and ‘70s. A digital, multi-media book, Garage Band Rockers endeavors to capture the incredible legacy that local musicians and their bands left for the music cultural heritage of Alberta.
