R. Harlan Smith Interview

Singer-songwriter and record producer Robert Harlan Smith is an important figure in the development of country music in Western Canada. As a young artist he recorded under the name Bob Smith until 1972, when he changed his name to R. Harlan Smith and adopted his signature country-pop sound. In 1974 he founded Edmonton’s Royalty Records label, which includes Canadian artists such as Gary Fjellgaard, Danny Hooper and Chris Nielson. An industry leader, Smith has served as President of the Alberta Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and as Director for the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA). He is a recipient of the Alberta Achiever Order of Excellence and was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
