Northern Cree Drum
The hand drum seen here was used by Steve Wood, founding member of the award-winning powwow group Northern Cree Singers, during their breakthrough performance at the 2017 Grammy Awards. A sacred instrument in Indigenous culture, the drum represents both the steady heartbeat of Earth and the circular nature of life. Drawing on the spirits of the animal and tree it was made from, the drum acts as a conduit connecting people to the Creator, and plays a significant role in the education, healing and history of Indigenous peoples.
“I hope it brings much good energy, much good feeling, much good spirit into this room, and everyone that walks through this room receives that and carries it on to their home, to their home fire, and their families, and through their life.” – Steve Wood
